Hong Kong official says no plan for Central Bank Digital Currency

A government official confirmed that Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has no plans to issue a central bank digital currency (CBDC). HKMA is the de facto central bank of Hong Kong.Joseph Chan, Acting Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury spoke about the topic at a council meeting with legislators in Hong Kong. He said that according to HKMA’s research, CBDC wouldn’t be as useful in Hong Kong compared to other jurisdictions. Read more

Quebec Gov’t to lift moratorium on energy sale to cryptocurrency miners

Cryptocurrency miners in Quebec have been suffering from the moratorium imposed by the government. Earlier in March 2018, the Quebecois government had put a ban on supplying electricity to crypto mining companies.Quebec Premier Phillipe Couillard had told cryptocurrency miners that the state-owned Hydro-Quebec will not be providing them cheap electricity anymore. $1 Million Ripple Ransom Demanded By Hackers Involved in Data Theft Of Canadian Banks

Bitcoins Worth $1.4 Million Confiscated Following Supreme Court Ruling in South Korea

The South Korean government has ordered confiscation of 191 bitcoins seized in a child-porn cybercrime case. The accused has been declared guilty and put to jail with an obligation to pay a $640,000 fine. Korean news Yonhap reported that South Korea’s apex court had endorsed a former court order of a forfeit of cryptocurrency related to cybersex crime. The Supreme Court sustained an appellate court’s sentence for a child pornography site operator. The court awarded a judgment of 18 months in prison, a confiscation of 191 bitcoins and a fine of 696 million won (US$644,000). Read more
